So I am having a problem with my brain where people ask me about the writing and I accidentally spill spoilers all over them. I think it’s because I’m writing synopses. It’s proving quite troublesome shifting from ‘give it to us straight, spoil the ending’ in writing a synopsis to ‘tell me how it’s going without giving anything away’ with real people.
The reverse is also true. The first full synopsis I wrote read more like a tease than anything. Actually the synopsis for book one still reads like that because the ending is a question, so even when I give it away it doesn’t sound like I am. Which… clearly I should have written a book that more readily leant itself to synopsising.
Or I could just work on being less terrible at this.
Clearly somewhere in all that time I spent writing when I was younger — honing my craft and whatnot — I should have taken a moment here and there to practice writing synopses and cover letters. I feel this would have led to less of me hitting my head against hard objects in the present.
So here’s my advice to people who want to be published at some point: when you’re looking at your work, checking for weaknesses and things you need to work on — look at your synopses as well. It’s a learning curve. Embrace it.
I, on the other hand, will go back to banging my head against the wall.
